Liver Conditions

The liver is one of the most vital organs in the body, responsible for filtering toxins, aiding digestion, and regulating metabolism. When the liver is damaged, it can affect your overall health, leading to serious complications.

Liver conditions can develop silently, often without noticeable symptoms, until they progress to an advanced stage. If left untreated, conditions such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis can lead to liver failure, significantly impacting quality of life.

At Newtown Gastroenterology, our team of experienced specialists provides expert diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management for a range of liver conditions. We use cutting-edge technology and a patient-focused approach to ensure the highest level of care. Whether you need routine screening, advanced imaging, or personalized treatment plans, we are here to help you take charge of your liver health.

SYMPTOMS OF VIRAL HEPATITIS & AVAILABLE TREATMENTS

Hepatitis B & C

Hepatitis B and C are viral infections that cause liver inflammation and, if left untreated, can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. Both are spread through contact with infected blood and bodily fluids, and both cause similar symptoms. However, it’s crucial to know that many people with hepatitis B or C may not experience symptoms for years, which is why routine screening is crucial for early detection.

When symptoms do occur, they often include:

  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dark urine
  • Nausea and vomiting

Hepatitis B Treatment

Hepatitis B is managed with antiviral medications that help suppress the virus and slow disease progression. While there is no cure for chronic hepatitis B, treatment focuses on reducing liver inflammation and preventing complications such as cirrhosis or liver cancer. Regular monitoring and liver function tests are essential for patients with hepatitis B to track disease progression and adjust treatment as needed.

Importantly, a vaccine is available to prevent hepatitis B infection.

Hepatitis C Treatment

Unlike hepatitis B, hepatitis C can often be cured. Direct-acting antiviral (DAA) medications offer a highly effective treatment, eliminating the virus in as little as 8-12 weeks. Early detection and treatment are crucial in preventing long-term liver damage and complications associated with chronic hepatitis C.

If you are at risk or experiencing symptoms, our team at Newtown Gastroenterology can provide comprehensive testing and expert care to protect your liver health.

HEPATIC STEATOSIS TREATMENT FROM A LIVER SPECIALIST

Fatty Liver Disease

Fatty liver disease, also known as hepatic steatosis, occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver. It is an increasingly common condition often associated with obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol. While some individuals with fatty liver disease may not experience symptoms, the condition can progress to liver inflammation (steatohepatitis), scarring, and even cirrhosis.

Fatty liver disease symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Discomfort or pain in the upper right abdomen
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Weakness
  • Enlarged liver detected during medical exams

Fatty Liver Disease Treatment

Treatment for fatty liver disease focuses on lifestyle modifications to reduce liver fat and inflammation. This includes adopting a healthier diet, increasing physical activity, and managing underlying conditions like diabetes. In severe cases, medications may be recommended to help prevent further liver damage.

MANAGEMENT OPTIONS FOR CIRRHOSIS

Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis is the result of long-term liver damage, where healthy liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue, impairing the organ’s ability to function. This condition develops gradually, often as a consequence of chronic hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or excessive alcohol consumption.

Common liver cirrhosis symptoms include:

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Swelling in the legs or abdomen (ascites)
  • Increased bruising or bleeding
  • Confusion or difficulty concentrating
  • Severe fatigue and weakness

Cirrhosis Treatment

While cirrhosis is not reversible, early intervention can slow its progression and help manage complications. Treatment may include medications to control symptoms, dietary changes, and, in severe cases, liver transplantation. Regular monitoring is essential to prevent further liver damage and improve quality of life.
