PANCREATITIS CAUSES, SYMPTOMS & TREATMENT OPTIONS

Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition of the pancreas that can be acute or chronic. Acute pancreatitis occurs suddenly and can be severe, while chronic pancreatitis develops gradually and may lead to long-term damage.

Common pancreatitis symptoms include:

  • Severe abdominal pain that may radiate to the back
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever and chills
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Oily or greasy stools

Dietary adjustments, such as avoiding alcohol and following a low-fat diet, are often the first line of treatment for pancreatitis and can help prevent flare-ups. In chronic cases, pancreatic enzyme supplements may be prescribed to aid digestion and improve nutrient absorption.

If symptoms persist or become severe, hospitalization may be required. There, IV fluids, pain management, and nutritional support can be given. In the most serious cases, surgical procedures may be necessary to remove blockages or damaged tissue.

If you experience persistent abdominal pain or other symptoms of pancreatitis, our specialists can provide expert care and management options to improve your quality of life.

Pancreatic Cysts

Pancreatic cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form in the pancreas. While some cysts are benign, others may have the potential to become cancerous, making early detection and monitoring essential.

Some of the most common symptoms of pancreatic cysts include:

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

For small, benign pancreatic cysts, immediate treatment is often unnecessary, but routine monitoring via imaging is essential for tracking any changes. If a cyst begins to cause discomfort or leads to complications, endoscopic drainage can be performed to alleviate pressure and symptoms.

However, if a cyst is large or carries the risk of becoming cancerous, our team may recommend surgical removal to prevent further health issues.

Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is a serious and often aggressive condition that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. Because symptoms may not appear until the cancer has progressed, regular screenings are essential for those at high risk.

Pancreatic cancer can cause symptoms like:

  • Persistent abdominal or back pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Jaundice
  • Loss of appetite
  • Digestive issues, including changes in stool color

In its early stages, surgery, such as the Whipple procedure, may be used to remove tumors before they spread. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are often recommended to shrink tumors and slow disease progression. Based on genetic testing results, advanced treatments, such as targeted therapy and immunotherapy, may also be considered to improve treatment outcomes and quality of life.

Noncancerous Pancreatic Tumors

Not all pancreatic tumors are cancerous, but they can still cause symptoms and require medical attention. These tumors can develop from hormone-producing cells or pancreatic ducts and may impact digestion and overall health.

Some symptoms of noncancerous pancreatic tumors include:

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Unexplained nausea
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Changes in digestion

Small, non-threatening tumors may only require periodic observation through imaging and monitoring. Some tumors affecting hormone production may require medication to regulate imbalances. If tumors grow or cause complications, surgical removal may be necessary to prevent future health concerns and restore normal pancreatic function.
